LOGGERHEAD SHORES Eco-Resort Architecture and Masterplanning in Belize
Loggerhead Shores sits on a peninsula at Gales Point, a village in the Belize District that people travel to for its West Indian manatees. Ervin Architecture master planned the resort: beachfront villas, a spa, oceanfront restaurants, water sports, and trails for snorkeling, hiking, and wildlife.
The systems came first, because there is no infrastructure to lean on. Solar generation, rainwater harvesting, and natural ventilation run the resort. The site plan works around what is already growing there rather than clearing to a pad, which matters more here than in most places — the ecosystem is the reason guests come at all.
The architecture takes its cues from Mayan and Garifuna building traditions rather than the generic tropical resort vocabulary. Sustainable materials, native planting, a kitchen built around local sourcing. EA’s scope runs from master planning through interior design, permitting, and ingress and egress.

Regional Precedent " Last Frontier"
A mile up the coast from the Loggerhead Shores site, on a brackish lagoon
that manatees frequent, stands a house called Last Frontier. Ervin
Architecture did not design it. EA stayed there while studying the site,
and four of the things it does are carried into the Loggerhead design.
The living floor is lifted clear of grade on concrete piers. On a coastal
lagoon in hurricane country the ground level is the level you expect to
lose, so it holds parking, storage, and stairs — nothing that can’t get
wet — and everything that matters sits above surge and flood. Rainwater
comes off the roof into tanks, because there is no municipal supply; that
makes roof area a water calculation as much as a shelter one, and it sets
the roof geometry. The pool runs on salt rather than delivered chlorine,
since a chemical supply chain to a remote coast is a standing liability.
The kitchen is outdoors — a thatched Mayan structure with a masonry
hearth, set away from the house at the end of a boardwalk. It keeps
cooking heat and smoke out of the living space, which is why the
arrangement is traditional on that coast and why it still works.
None of this is exotic. It is what a building has to do there to keep
functioning without a grid, a water main, or a road crew after a storm.
